Look at MacDonalds, CocaCola, Virgin Atlantic, RollsRoyce. Immediately, these names conjure up the expectation of taste, service, luxury, freshness whenever the audience finds the brand.

Choosing a brand image can be one of the most difficult decisions in starting a business, especially when resources are stretched. But the best person to advise and create a new image is a professional designer. It is tempting to skimp on design but investing in a professionally designed logo, logostyle or brand identity will pay dividends in a very short time.

Corporate identity (or CoID), are the elements which make up the recognisable representation of the company's or organisation's name and details.

CoID usually consists of:
  • A logo (symbol) or logostyle (special lettering)
  • Colour scheme
  • Primary and secondary typefaces
  • Layout style applied to all collateral, printing, website, vehicles, signage etc
The corporate identity rarely changes. When it does it is usually a transition or evolution rather than a complete change. There is precedence for a complete change as when a company finds itself in a difficult position with quality or needing a new market (eg Datsun to Nissan).

Branding

Branding is usually an identity for a product or service owned by a company. The company would normally have a CoID and would differentiate its products and services with individual brands aimed at specific target markets (eg VAG: Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Lamborgini etc).

Housestyle

The housetyle is the way secondary elements are applied to the corporate identity or branding. The housestyle creates the ambience, the relevance and the fit to the target audience. The housestyle is an element which must change to suit changing market conditions, fashion and placement.
